Kness Pest Prevention In Your Garage

Kness Protected GarageGarages are one of the most versatile spaces a homeowner has. It’s space that can be used for just about anything. From storing junk that won’t fit in the basement to acting as a shelter for a party, the garage is an extension of your living space. However, it can provide a great place for bugs and rodents to thrive as well. Here are a few steps you can take to make sure that you don’t give any uninvited house guests an opportunity to get into your garage and damage your property or even your vehicles.

Seal Up Points of Entry

There are plenty of ways for pests to gain entry into your garage. One of the main points of access is the hardest to miss, the garage door. The easiest way to prevent insects and animals from getting in through the garage door is to make sure to close it when you are not around. Insects like flies are attracted to big moving air currents and an open garage door provides that opportunity for insects to rush in. Make sure to leave it closed at night as well. Nighttime is when many rodents and small animals are active and they can easily scurry in when the door is open.

Be sure to check the weather stripping and rubber seals around your windows and doors. Even when you have the garage door closed, if the door’s bottom rubber stopper is degraded and worn, it might not create a tight enough seal to keep pests out. Make sure to check its condition every couple of years. Inspect your windows and other doors for bad or broken seals. One easy way to identify a bad seal is if you can spot any light coming in-between the weather stripping and the window or door.

Reduce Clutter

In a garage, it is easy to just throw your stuff to one side of the wall and walk away. But the more clutter you have in a space like that, the easier it is for insects and rodents to establish hiding spots. So make sure to clean out your garage and get your items stored properly. Organize your stuff in plastic tubs and place them onto shelving above the ground. It is generally not a good idea to use cardboard boxes as pests can chew through those boxes and damage the items inside. Make sure any bird seed or pet food is kept in a sealable container. This way you eliminate any potential food sources for pests that might enter the garage.
